Electrical installation for the highest requirements

OBO solutions for the oil and gas industry

OBO systems prove their quality under the toughest environmental conditions – new solution brochure presents a comprehensive portfolio.

Extreme temperatures, aggressive substances, explosive atmospheres - the electrical infrastructure in oil and gas transport must work safely under the toughest conditions. The directives and specifications pertaining to the material and installation are particularly strict for a good reason. OBO Bettermann has now compiled a special solutions portfolio for the special requirements of the industry. It ranges from newly developed cable support systems for cable routing ensuring the maintenance of electrical functionality through to systems for fire protection, lightning protection and surge protection. A new solutions brochure from OBO shows how operators can profit from the complete product range with matched products.

Kilometres of cables must be routed in plants in the oil and gas industry, whereby moisture, soiling and extreme temperatures make installation considerably more difficult. OBO meets these environmental conditions using cable support systems made of stainless steel or with a plastic coating. Cable ladders, vertical sections and wide span systems can cope with high cable loads and wide support spacings. In addition, cable trays and mesh cable trays allow safe cable routing. Besides the tried-and-trusted RKS-Magic®, the SKS-Magic®, MKS-Magic® and IKS-Magic® mean there are completely new systems in the product range. All the cable support systems are subjected to stability tests in the in-house BET Test Centre, along with salt spray tests and lightning protection and surge protection tests. The products also fulfil strict directives for potentially explosive areas with certifications according to ATEX, DNV and the Fieldbus Foundation.

In the oil and gas industry, maintaining the functionality of the key electrical systems in the event of fire is one of the central protective measures. OBO systems for cable systems with the maintenance of electrical functionality from E30 to E90 are tested according to DIN 4102 Part 12. They ensure that safety-relevant systems, such as emergency lighting, fire alarm systems or smoke extraction systems, remain available. During a fire, insulation systems also offer valuable time savings, because they maintain the fire sections, thus preventing the rapid spread of fire and smoke. Tested false ceiling systems, as well as metal fire protection ducts, are suitable for the securing of the escape and rescue routes.

In a potentially explosive environment, direct and indirect impacts of lightning strikes pose a considerable danger. To protect systems, OBO offers a well thought-out concept, in which all the elements are matched: From the air-termination system, the insulated OBO isCon® arrestor conducts the lighting current without ignition sparks from the impact point to the earthing system. This routes some of the energy into the earth and some into the equipotential bonding of the building. In areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere, insulated, encapsulated spark gaps with the approval for use in potentially explosive areas must be used for equipotential bonding, as fulfilled by the OBO Parex spark gap.

Properly installed surge protection also offers safety against cable-bound faults of the energy technology and data and communication technology. OBO surge protection systems offer optimum protection of the telecommunications and data cables. They react before the insulation in electrical and electronic devices is destroyed by surge voltages.

OBO systems can prove their reliability every day in the chemical and petrochemical industry. They are globally certified and fulfil the key international standards. This simplifies the planning and execution of deployments around the world and ensures cost optimisation. The configuration of the systems is particularly simple using the electronic planning aids in the Construct portal (www.obo-construct.com).
