For PV surge protection, OBO offers a wide range for all applications: from lightning current and combination arresters, to surge protection for power and data technology, to completely pre-terminated system solutions. Because there are always two sides to the surge protection of PV systems. Both on the direct current side and on the alternating current side, surge voltages can be coupled into the system. The consequence can be damage to the inverters. OBO surge protection reliably and comprehensively protects every side. Existing data cables can be safely included in the equipotential bonding using suitable protective devices. The generator connection boxes pre-terminated with lightning and surge protection from the OBO range have proven to be especially practical for protecting the DC-side input of the inverter.
On systems without an external lightning protection system, standards do not require surge protection on the DC side. Nonetheless, its use is expressly recommended, so that the photovoltaic system is protected when surge voltages occur, for example due to switching actions in the network. At the same time, this protects the availability of the system.
If the inverter is connected to information or communication equipment, then these cables should also be included in the equipotential bonding using suitable surge protective devices.
