New environmental product declaration

for the mesh cable tray and cable tray systems of the OBO Bettermann Group

MENDEN. High requirements in terms of sustainable production processes and specific environmental declarations are frequently required by architects and planners, and often serve as the decision-making basis for the optimum combination of construction products that are appropriate for each individual building. The mesh cable tray and cable tray systems of the OBO Bettermann Group now also carry the Type III Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD for short. Both products are used for the safe routing of cables in electrical installations.

An EPD is based on the ISO 14025 and EN 15804 international standards, which, on the one hand, regulate the basic principles and methods for Type III environmental marks and, on the other hand, define the appropriate product category according to the construction product. Eco-balances are used to create EPDs and are created according to DIN EN ISO 14040 and 14044.

The eco-balance is compiled by the service provider LCEE according to DIN EN ISO 14040 and DIN EN ISO 14044. The data is checked and verified by IFT Rosenheim. The data basis is the collected data of the production facility of OBO Bettermann Produktion Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG and the generic data of the “GaBi 8” database.

The verified environmental declaration applied to the named products has a validity of five years. Whether architects, planners, engineers, clients, facility managers or auditors ‒ any interested party can use the publicly available EPDs to obtain an overview of the eco-balance values and any product-related points of environmental impact.

EPDs not only allow the eco-balancing and evaluation of buildings, but also integral planning. Even in the drafting phase, architects and technical planners use EPDs to compare different components, construction methods and options, and can thus select the ideal combination of construction products for each individual building.

Thanks to EPDs for materials, construction products and construction components, ecological aspects can now be included in the sustainability evaluation of structures. This is primarily about the basic information for the evaluation of the ecological building quality. The comprehensive and also detailed eco-balance data and information contained in the EPDs are summarised in a standardised format on just a few pages. For this, the manufacturing and disposal phases are taken into account in a life cycle analysis.

In addition, our EPDs are published via Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB) and, in this context, carry the DGNB label. Thus, the internationally recognised EPDs form a key cornerstone of the building certification systems of DGNB, BNB, BREEAM and LEED.

From now on, the EPDs for our OBO Bettermann mesh cable tray and cable tray systems can be found in the DGNB Navigator, thus showing the life cycle analysis transparently. (DGNB Navigator: https://www.dgnb-navigator.de/)
