Project description

The Humboldt Forum in the former Berlin Palace will be a new landmark and a clear core of Berlin's city centre. With a great majority, in 2007 the German Federal Parliament decided to rebuild the Berlin Stadtschloss, which was bombed out and damaged in the Second World War, with three historic facades and the Schlüterhof.

The owner of this reconstruction is the Stiftung Humboldt Forum in the Berlin palace. The foundation is responsible, together with the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning, for the planning of the architects and technical planners. In an international call for tender, the renowned Italian architect Professor Franco Stella won the major project.

The total cost for the reconstruction is 615.5 million euros. The costs are covered by the Federal Republic of Germany, donations and further investments by the Berlin Federal State. In the Humboldt Forum, Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz will exhibit non-European collections of its state museums in Berlin from 2019 onwards. In addition, a science museum with different collections, as well as book collections of the Berlin libraries, are planned for the palace. Thus, a conglomeration of art, culture and science is being created with the offer of exhibitions and events of the Berlin Museum Island, a beacon of European art and culture. This special connection is intended to create a dialogue of global cultures in Berlin's city centre, offer an insight into international culture and to promote communication between the cultures.

As soon as the reconstruction is completed on the 250th birthday of the eponym Alexander von Humboldt in 2019, 20,000 tonnes of steel and 100,000 cubic metres of concrete will have been installed. The palace will have a usable area of 41,000 square metres and 400 continuous metres of facade will again shine in baroque majesty.

General building information

The OBO Bettermann Group is proud to be a part of this historic project, which is being given new life in the present. Solutions from OBO can be found in the ceilings, walls and raised floors of the palace. The OBO products and special solutions used come from the connection and fastening systems, fire protection systems, device systems and underfloor systems.

What type of challenges occurred during construction?

A particular challenge for OBO Bettermann, the innovation leader from the Sauerland region in Germany, was to make the underfloor special cassettes available as a heavy-duty version of nominal size 4, 7, R7, 9 and R9 with load requirements of up to 20 kN, despite the height extension of up to 550 mm
